The weather is getting warmer, the days are getting longer and green is returning to the landscape. That can only mean one thing: spring is coming! Winter can be devastating to gardens to say the least, and it can seem like a mammoth task to try and revive your garden after the wet weather, lack on sunshine and freezing temperatures have destroyed almost all of it.
The good news is, although it might seem like a big task to revive your garden, it doesn’t have to be. A few simple changes can instantly give your garden a new lease of life fit for the promise of spring. Simply Plastics have lots of material options for your DIY project, should you choose to build something. If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to get your garden back on track, here are a few things you can try.
1. Paint the Fence
If there’s one thing that’s sure to give your outdoor space a brand new look, it’s a revamped fence/perimeter. A simple lick of paint can transform a once tired and worn border into a fresh and new looking focal point. Rather than opting for a standard shade of brown or dark green, why not try something new? After all, spring is all about newness! A pastel green, blue or even pink shade can really breathe new life into your fence, no matter how old it is.
Whilst you’re painting your fence, it’s a good time to check that it’s all in working order and replace any panels that have seen better days or that have been damaged throughout winter.
2. Fix the Lawn
Aside from the fence, if you have grass in your garden, it’s likely to be the second most eye-drawing feature. If it’s muddy, dead or wilted, it can really bring down the overall look of your outdoor space. For this reason, you’ll want to fix it ASAP. Firstly, it probably needs a trim, so you’ll want to get the lawnmower and strimmer out. Next, it’s time to tackle any weeds that might have reared their ugly heads. Finally, you need to bring it back to life and fix any bald patches. You can do this by distributing some seed across your lawn and watering it until it grows into lusciously green blades.
If you find yourself bored of having to do this during every run up to spring, one good option is to install fake grass. Installing fake grass or artificial grass has benefits. It’s easier than you might think and solves pretty much all the problems listed above, and it’s fairly easy. If you’re wondering ‘what tools do I need to lay artificial grass?’, the answer is barely any, and if you’re thinking ‘is it worth it?’, the answer is definitely.
3. Inject Some Colour
So, now you have a fresh looking fence and a lawn to boot, you’ll want to think about plant life. Winter has a bad habit of killing of pretty plants, but the good news is, you can pick up cheap garden plants at almost any garden centre, and by dedicating just half an hour to planting them, you can really bring your garden back to life and start to attract some of the beautiful spring wildlife like bees and butterflies.
4. Construct a Planter
Don’t have a lawn? No problem. You can still inject some colour and life into your outdoor space by building a freestanding planter. It’s easy to do and can be used all year round, so even when winter destroys all the green goodness of your garden, you can plant some winter-friendly plants and keep things looking pretty all year round. You could paint the planters the same colour as your fence, or you could paint them contrasting, fun colours.
5. Upcycle Some Furniture
Do you have some old furniture or existing garden furniture that’s looking a bit tired? If so, fix it up! Reupholster it, paint it and repair it where necessary and you’ll find your garden instantly looks ready to accept guests for those warm summer afternoon gatherings. You could even put a rug underneath the table and chairs to add a homely feel. If you’re garden is small and you have an old mirror going spare, again, fix it up and put it outside. It will reflect light and make your garden look bigger, brighter and more inviting.
So, now you’ve got the knowhow, what are you waiting for?
