Stepping back after a hard day’s work touching up your house and examining your handiwork is one of life’s great pleasures. You know how you want your home to look to passers-by and you’re well on your way to creating the perfect frontage. That’s all well and good, but make sure you’re not neglecting your interiors. The inside of your house is just as important as the outside, and not just because you’re going to be spending a large amount of time there. Here’s how you can add the finishing touches to your home, both interior and exterior.
Consider internal cladding
If you’re creating a natural, rustic-style interior, then internal timber cladding can be a perfect way to bring that theme across. Whether you’re opting for a bold bedroom feature, a smooth wooden kitchen adornment, or a unique ceiling design, internal cladding can help make your house feel more organic and homely. You can apply this technique anywhere and can opt for any colour, so there’s no reason to skimp based on a conservative (or not!) colour scheme.
Display art
Many people neglect the value of well-displayed and properly chosen artwork in their homes. Displaying art can make a boring home exciting and can transform a well-designed home into an interior masterpiece. We’re not just talking about tasteful and blandly decorative art; we mean putting something up that truly communicates your personality and tells your guests exactly what you and your family are all about. Pick your favourite artist and go to town!
Put up photographs
Nothing says “home sweet home” like a series of photographs documenting unforgettable family trips or beautiful photoshoots, such as those you can create at venturephotography.com. If you’re feeling particularly cosy, you could put up professionally-shot family portraits. Want to show guests your travels around the world, or a particularly photogenic place you’ve been to? Why not display these trips in the form of photographs? You can put them anywhere in the house, too – just make sure they’re somewhere people can see them.
Co-ordinate colour
It’s important to make sure that your home reflects a central colour scheme. Painting rooms different colours will give an overall sense of chaos and disharmony to your home. We’re not saying the colour scheme you opt for has to be bland or boring; quite the contrary, in fact. You should choose a colour scheme that reflects your family’s unique style in the same way that your art and photography choices do. Just make sure it’s consistent throughout the house or clashes will occur.
Don’t neglect the garden
If you’ve got a back garden – or a front garden, for that matter – then you should join the 27 million or so people who regularly engage in gardening in the UK. Don’t neglect this important part of your house, because it can add a significant amount of resale value if you decide to move on. Gardening is hard work; it’ll take you a significant amount of time, elbow grease, and, yes, probably money to get it looking how you want. After all is said and done and you have a beautiful garden, though, it will be worth it.
Make it personal
Don’t just buy generic ornaments from shops and hope that displaying them will make your home feel unique. You’ve got to make sure that everything you’re putting up in your home has a little part of you in it. Things that have been important to you in your life – first musical instruments, accoutrements from school or college, et cetera – would make excellent ornaments for your house. If you don’t have anything like this, then there’s never been a better time to start a collection!
Install dimmer switches
Sometimes, you don’t want a binary switch between harsh lighting and complete darkness. It’s often better to simply sit in low light; if you’re wanting to relax at the end of a long day, for example, or if you want to reduce your visual stimuli. To this end, installing dimmer switches or smart lighting can be a great way to exert greater control over the lighting in your home. They don’t have to be complicated; even a switch with three or four variable light intensities can make a world of difference.
Put plants in your home
The medical and mental benefits of plants cannot be overstated. Simply decorating your house with certain plants can do wonders for your mental health, clean the air, and generally contribute to a greener and more attractive home. To get the maximum effect, make sure you’re putting your plants in as many rooms as possible. Of course, this does mean you will need to care for your plants, so make sure you aren’t too busy to give them a round or two of watering each day.
Don’t forget rugs, curtains, and cushions
You might have the most beautiful sofa in the world, but without a few well-placed cushions, it will still feel incomplete. Cushions are more than just visual adornments; they provide comfort if you’re trying to relax, they can contribute massively to the aesthetic of a room, and – if you pick the right designs – they can even be great talking points for guests. The same goes for floor rugs and curtains for the windows. Don’t skimp on these important aspects of your home.
