A small apartment may be small in size. But, I have found out through personal experience that you can make it look much bigger if decorated right.
It all lies in making the most use of the existing space. And in buying and using the furniture that you need and will be using.
So if you wonder how to make your small apartment look stunning, in my opinion, these 5 ideas could help!
1. Decorate based on a realistic day-to-day routine
You can decorate your apartment anyway you want. But it’s better to keep your everyday routine in mind while doing so. For example, a dining table is unnecessary if you will be eating in the living room most of the time.
The best way to find out what you need most in your apartment is by first walking through the apartment. I did it and imagined myself spending the day in the apartment. It helped me a lot in deciding on what my home ACTUALLY needed!
2. Multifunctional pieces maximize usage of space
I learned that the biggest trick to save space was in using multifunctional pieces. You could make use of vertical space. Like adding shelves, hanging paintings, and using wall-mounted lights instead of standing lamps.
You could also use multifunctional furniture like a standing desk converter. It was an excellent investment for me because I also needed a home office in the apartment. I couldn’t create any dedicated space. Nor could I allot a separate work table because of space constraints.
The standing desk converter perfectly transformed my existing study table into a standing desk. I placed it on my study table whenever I had to work, and when the table was free.
Besides, the converters are easily set up and dismantled, perfect to use in small spaces. I just had to fold and store the study table converter away when I didn’t need it.
Another suggestion I have is to use an Ottoman table instead of a coffee table. It’s perfect for storing remote controls, some books, or even games. These things anyway need a place, and it’s better than using some other dedicated storage space for it.
3. Mirrors help create more space
Another stunning idea is to cover your wall space with mirrors instead of paintings. Mirrors make the room look larger by reflecting on other parts of the home.
It is unlike paintings that only create a dead end. You can even make your ceiling look much higher than it is with mirrors. All you need to do is fit a full-length standing mirror on one of your walls.
4. Use appropriately sized furniture
Don’t get carried away and buy furniture because it ‘looks good’. Instead, look for furniture that’s the right size for your small space. Of course, I did spend some extra time measuring space and making some calculations. But, the efforts were well worth it.
I didn’t end up buying furniture that couldn’t fit into my apartment. Nor did I buy something that took so much space that there wasn’t space for anything else!
I could even transform my petite eat-in kitchen into a cozy dining nook with this idea of mine. I added a cute but perfectly-sized banquette. It was perfect at providing the extra seating my eat-in kitchen needed.
5. Keep lighting, layout, and point of interest in mind
Another trick I have to give is to make the best use of God’s natural light. Yes, it helps in brightening your small apartment, so that it ends up looking much larger and brighter than it is.
So don’t use a curtain to cover your windows. Instead, look for something that doesn’t block the natural light. Don’t forget to also use some appropriate lights that make your apartment look large even in the night.
I’ve also learned that you need to keep your layout in mind while decorating your small apartment. It’s because there are so many layouts you can use. You should be able to choose and use the best for yourself.
For example, you could combine some rooms like the dining and living rooms to save on space. You could also use your sofa to work in two ways. It can be an additional seating arrangement, and work as a divider to create a more tidy and exciting apartment.
Oh yes, a focal point makes your home exciting and beautiful, no matter how small or large it may be. I placed some plants in the corner, and wow! It not only made the corner look appealing. But it also supported such a calm and healthy vibes to the living room.
So there you go! Try implementing these simple but stunning changes to your small apartment. You will find that your apartment is no longer as small as you thought it was!
