We all know that moving house can be a manic time as everything gets packed away ready for moving and your head is filled with ideas of how to furnish your new place. The sheer practicality of moving house is stressful enough without the added emotional impact as you leave behind one home to make a new one. In this list you’ll find some tips to make the process as seamless and stress free as possible.
1 – Weekend Bag
The first recommendation on my list is to pack a bag as if you were going away for a weekend. So include things like spare clothes, a wash bag, medication and other essential toiletries. This at least means that if for any reason your belongings are delayed or inaccessible for whatever reason, you still have the essentials to hand. It’s generally a good idea to keep a personal bag or two if you have hired a removals company so that you can get to the things you need while the rest is taken care of by the moving company.
2 – Cleaning Supplies
No doubt you’ll be fully prepared for this one anyway but it’s always a must-have for the initial days after arrival. The commotion of moving into a new home can often warrant a professional cleaning service but if you’d prefer to take care of some of the labour yourself, a box with all the essential cleaning products is extremely practical – you may want to spruce cupboards and drawers up before putting in your cutlery or clothes!
3 – Food and Drink
While some of your fridge-freezer goods won’t survive the journey, it goes without saying that having a few easy items stocked in the fridge/ cupboards will really help for those first few days while you get your bearings. One thing in particular I’d recommend is tea or coffee; having access to this is very reassuring during a move! Also if you can make a sandwich or an easy meal, this will be so useful for the first couple days until you’re able to stock up.
4 – Pyjamas and Bed Sheets
There’s nothing worse than getting into an unprepared bed… while this may be an exaggeration, it is rather unpleasant which is why I’d recommend having bedding easily accessible. There is just something about clean sheets that is restorative and on your first night in a new place, for me it’s a must!
5 – Electrical Items
As I mentioned earlier, having quick access to certain food and drink basics is so important and with that comes household electronics. For hot beverages a kettle is obviously quite important or the toaster to prepare a quick snack – I’d recommend having those kitchen essentials available to use from the first box opened. The same goes for chargers; powering computers, tablets or phones is a must so knowing exactly where they’re packed is a great idea to ensure that all your important electrical items are usable.
6 – Toolbox
I would say that hopefully you will not be needing this immediately when you arrive at your new house but it doesn’t hurt to know where a screwdriver is or maybe some duct tape. I’d say those two in particular would come in most handy when arriving at a new place. I’m always amazed at how practical and in how many situations duct tape comes in to fix a problem. So while it isn’t first on the list, knowing where the toolbox is does definitely help in a bind.
7 – Toiletries
A number of these would be in my first category on this list but there are a few extras that can be added such as towels, toilet paper and soap for instance. A lot of the other toiletries such as bleaches and cleaners can be stocked at a later date but the above suggestions are going to be immediately necessary.
8 – Bin Bags
This one is highly recommended as for me, personally, I try to keep everything organised and clear of clutter. Having bin bags to keep the excess garbage under control after moving day was a must for me as it helped to monitor the waste situation with the unpacking. A bin bag will also help keep desired items clean from dust or debris so can have other uses apart from for rubbish.
While there may of course be variations depending on your circumstances, this list serves as a great starting point to ensure a stress-free moving day!
