Be Organised
There’s nothing worse than an unorganised project, no matter what or who is involved. Whether you need to contact your suppliers a few weeks before the start or create a document to work from, ensure the relevant processes and details are attended to. Say you are looking to build a shed made of steel, or want to redesign the layout of your garden, you will want to make sure everything is planned beforehand. This removes most issues that people face with DIY projects, giving you more time to focus on the project itself!
Set Clear Deadlines
Whether you are taking on the project by yourself or you are working with others, you should always set clear deadlines. Clear deadlines allow you to work towards something specific and gives direction of a clear goal. Be realistic and smart with your deadlines and make sure they are achievable. If you are completing work for someone else or helping someone out, it’s essential that you set transparent expectations and estimations for completion of the project.
Have a Back Up
Sometimes things don’t go to plan so it is essential to have a backup plan and contingencies. You may need to look at other suppliers of your resources to find someone to help you out during the project. Whatever the circumstances are, always try and find a solution. In the particular case of DIY, finding solutions is key. Problems do nothing but cause stress to us all, so focus on making things work, even if it wasn’t what you originally planned. This means less time is wasted and the end product is always better.
Communication is Vital
If you are working on the project yourself then communication may not be at the forefront of your mind, but it can still be important. If there is anyone else involved such as a family member, friend or even a company, make it a priority to keep them informed of new developments and any changes. They may even be able to help you if you come across any problems or need support. Of course, DIY is all about doing it yourself but if you require support during any stage, never be afraid to ask.
Reflection on the Project
Once the project is complete, it’s always good to reflect on the situation. What went well? What could have been better? What have you learnt that you can use in the next one? DIY projects can often pass you by within a second, especially if you decide to move onto the next thing. Reflection is vital and means you will always do an even better job next time. If you are not confident in your own self-reflection, you can always get a second opinion from someone else.
