It seems we’re spending more time outdoors in our gardens than ever before, from entertaining friends and family with al fresco summer suppers, to catching some rays whilst reading a good book. Even if your outdoor space isn’t blessed with acres of land, or year-round sunshine, there are some simple cost-effective ways you can make the most out of your small garden space.
Take planting to new heights
Make the most of your small space by using every vertical inch. Use creepers like wisteria up the wall for added height and drama, especially in the spring and summer months when flowers blossom. You can also get crafty with vertical shelving and create your own herb garden. The height allows you to use space more effectively and gives you extra ‘floor-space’ for dining. Railway sleepers are a sturdy and cost effective form of garden shelving.
Let walls do double duty
While you might not need extra seating all the time, on the occasions when friends come over, you’ll want to be able to accommodate them. Adding raised beds surrounded by walls will not only add a new dimension to your garden space, but you’ll create extra places for people to perch too. Add some cushions in colours that match your plants for extra comfort.
Use mirrors
Placing mirrors in amongst shrubs will help reflect light and give the illusion of depth. Similarly, adding water features will help reflect light, creating the feeling of a brighter space. Dark corners benefit greatly from the addition of mirrors, but you’ll want to avoid using water features here as it can create a damp, cold atmosphere instead of a bright and light one.
String up lights
Outdoor fairy lights are a saviour of small gardens. String them around tree trunks and along branches or hang them in a canopy style over seating areas to create a cosy feel. Brightly coloured bulbs are perfect if you’re looking for an eclectic Moroccan feel for your outdoor space, whilst traditional fairy lights with a soft yellow glow are best suited for pared-back modern aesthetics as well as traditional courtyard spaces.
